Interviewing/Job Search Tips

The Search Process

You've heard that "getting a job is a job in itself". Treat your search as a job:

  • Set your alarm, Just like you are getting up for work.
  • Get dressed, Just like you are going to work.
  • Make phone calls. Recruiters, Help Wanted Ads, Friends, Relatives... Everyone.
  • Get on-line. Check out companies you might like to work for.
  • Become a networking fiend. Anyone, Anywhere may have the right job for you, or know of that job.
  • Read the paper/watch the news. Watch for expansions, bid awards, new companies relocating to the area.
  • Join ANY group. Rafting, Skiing, Internet, Investment Clubs, etc. Meet new people.
  • Talk to strangers. In line at the grocery store, while giving blood, while getting a haircut.
  • Get managers names. Human Resources is busy - Get to the Department Heads.
  • Call Advanced Placement - We can do all of this for you!

The Application Process

Even though you have your resume in hand, many employers will still ask you to complete a standard job application.

  • Be VERY nice to everyone you come in contact with.
  • Read the application thoroughly before starting to complete it.
  • Bring your own blue or black ballpoint pen.
  • Bring a copy of your resume, even if you've already sent a copy in.
  • References should be people that have agreed to be used as a reference.
  • Write legibly and avoid abbreviating anything.

The Interview Process

The interviewer is looking for examples and details about your work and opinions. Don't offer one-word answers. The interviewer is looking for information and examples of your level of skill, desire to succeed, responsible attitude, dependability, motivations and flexibility.

  • Be friendly and formal to EVERYONE
  • Arrive 5 to 10 minutes early
  • Appear attentive and alert at all times
  • Tell the interviewer if you are interested in the job (and, if you are not!)
  • Send a thank you note
